BBQ, Tents, and Starbucks: How South Korea Revolutionized Baseball

SisaWeek — Staff writer Kwon Jeong-du · Intern reporter Oh Seung-hyun The KBO League launched in 1982 with six teams and is now in its 45th season. The league has grown to 10 teams and gone through major changes: a fan base that was once dominated by older men now skews much younger and includes many more women. New stadiums that can rival Major League venues have also changed how fans experience games. From seats that place you right in the action to buffet-style tables, innovative seating options are multiplying.

For fans new to live games, picking the right seat can be tricky. Here are some standout seating options that make a ballpark visit more memorable.

◇ Live experience outshines TV — and it’s a great date option

Cheering is central to the ballpark experience. Led by cheer captains and cheerleaders, thousands of fans shout, sing and ride the highs and lows of each inning — and the energy is a real stress reliever. Remember: stadiums split seating by team. Most parks divide sections along the first-base and third-base lines, but which side is home or away varies by venue. Check before you buy so you don’t accidentally sit in the other team’s section.

Stadiums vary widely in size, and seat sightlines differ accordingly. Seats close to the field put you near the players and amps up the intensity, but they can limit your view of the whole field. Seats farther back or in the outfield give you a full-field perspective but feel less immediate; they often come with tables or other amenities. Some seats sit close to the dugout or offer a clear view of the bullpen where pitchers warm up. Pick a location based on what you want to get out of the game.

If you want maximum excitement, aim for seats directly behind the catcher or adjacent to the first- or third-base infield. Parks often label these areas with names like the “Exciting Zone” or “Surprise Zone.” Suwon KT Wiz Park calls its infield seats the “Hi-Five Zone” and sometimes invites fans onto the field after a home win for a postgame high-five with players.

Food plays a big role in the ballpark experience, and some seating options double as dining experiences.

At Incheon SSG Landers Field, the famed BBQ Zone offers table seating for groups of four to eight with electric grills so fans can cook while watching the game. Suwon KT Wiz Park’s Wiz Camping Zone provides tents and grills for a similar barbecue setup, and Changwon NC Park also operates barbecue-style bench-table seats for groups.

Daegu’s Samsung Lions Park offers the Party Floor Live seats — terrace table seating tied to an on-site buffet — so fans can eat a variety of dishes while watching the game. Daejeon’s Hanwha Life Ballpark features the Innings VIP Bar & Room/Terrace, serving fare from “1985 Innings,” a sports-bar concept that channels a Major League vibe. Aramark, which supplies food services to many global sports venues and MLB clubs, brought the 1985 Innings concept to Korea and offers popular ballpark menu items from Major League parks.

If you’re planning a cozy date, couples’ seats are a great pick. Incheon SSG Landers Field even has an outfield “Home Run Couple Zone,” where a lucky fan might snag a home-run ball. Changwon NC Park offers a “cafe + ballpark” option: the Starbucks terrace inside the stadium lets you enjoy drinks and snacks while watching the game — note that those seats belong to the store and require purchases from that Starbucks location.

All these options help explain why ballparks remain so popular. When you head to a game, pick a standout seat — it can make your live experience unforgettable.
