How to Clean an Electric Rice Cooker

Two tablespoons of vinegar in your electric rice cooker can actually make your rice taste better. Lots of people cook rice every day but skip deep-cleaning their cooker because they don’t know how. Here’s a simple routine using two tablespoons of vinegar to get your rice cooker sparkling again.
1. Add vinegar and run a cycle

Start by filling the inner pot with water up to the 2-cup mark. Add two tablespoons of white vinegar — one tablespoon per cup is a good rule of thumb. You don’t need more than about 2 cups of water for this trick to work.

If your rice cooker has an “auto-clean” or similar steam-clean setting, use it. If not, just run a normal cook cycle.

As the vinegar water heats and steams, it helps loosen and lift stubborn residue inside the cooker.
2. Detach removable parts

When the cycle finishes, let the cooker cool for a bit, then remove all parts that can be detached.

Pay special attention to the pressure release/valve area — gunk can build up and harden there. Make sure it’s clean so it won’t get clogged.

Also remove the drip tray or water-collection tray at the back and set it aside for cleaning.
3. Wash the parts

Fill a basin with warm water and stir in 1–2 tablespoons of baking soda. The mild abrasiveness helps lift residue and makes scrubbing easier.

Soak the removed parts in the baking soda solution and scrub them. For stubborn gunk in the pressure valve area, gently scrape with a plastic spatula or a soft plastic tool to avoid damage.

Rinse everything thoroughly with clean water, then dry completely with a clean, dry towel. If you put parts back while they’re still damp, they can trap moisture and develop odors.

Finally, reassemble the cooker in reverse order. After steaming the interior with vinegar and scrubbing the removable parts with baking soda, your rice cooker should look and perform like new.
Once the interior is properly cleaned, your rice will taste as delicious as it did when the cooker was brand new.
