On May 25 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, BTS beat out global superstars including Bad Bunny, Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift to take Artist of the Year at the 2026 AMAs.
The American Music Awards are considered one of the three major U.S. pop-music ceremonies, alongside the Grammys and the Billboard Music Awards. Nominees are selected based on streaming, album sales, radio airplay and tour revenue, and winners are chosen by fan votes.
BTS previously became the first Asian act to win Artist of the Year in November 2021 for their single \”Butter.\” After members completed mandatory military service and reunited as a full group, they released their fifth studio album, ARIRANG, in March. Two months later, they claimed their second major U.S. ceremony top prize.
RM said, \”ARMY did it again. We’re grateful for the honor of receiving this precious award once more after every member completed military service. As always, we extend our deepest thanks to ARMY around the world who have been with us for the past 13 years.\”
Jimin thanked fans in English, saying, \”Thank you for coming to the tour and for the love in every city.\” He then bowed and spoke in Korean: \”To ARMY who always support and love us, thank you and I love you.\”
At the ceremony, BTS also won Song of the Summer for \”SWIM,\” the lead single from ARIRANG, and took home Best Male K-pop Artist, finishing the night with three awards.
HYBE’s U.S.-Korea girl group KATSEYE won the New Artist award. Member Sophia said, \”I want to give special thanks tonight to BTS for inspiring us to showcase our culture on a global scale.\” Korean member Yoonchae expressed gratitude in Korean, saying she was thankful to share the moment with her bandmates, and then added in English, \”We’ll keep expressing our culture with pride.\”
Netflix’s animated series K-pop Demon Hunters and its original soundtrack (OST), \”Golden,\” picked up several awards, including Best Soundtrack, Song of the Year and Best Vocal Performance.
Korean-American singers Lee Jae and Ray Amee, who perform \”Golden,\” attended the ceremony and accepted the trophies. Fellow singer Audrey Nuna did not attend. Lee Jae said, \”It feels like I’ve properly closed a chapter,\” and thanked the K-pop Demon Hunters team.
