[Sports Today reporter Kang Tae-gu] The San Diego Padres snapped a losing streak with a 7-3 win over the Oakland Athletics. Song Seong-mun entered as a defensive replacement but did not record a hit.
San Diego beat Oakland 7-3 on the 23rd (Korean time) at Petco Park in San Diego, California, in a 2026 Major League Baseball game.
The victory moved the Padres to 30-20, keeping them in second place in the National League West. They cut the deficit to half a game behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers (31-20).
Song, left out of the starting lineup, came in as a defensive replacement at second base in the top of the eighth.
Song had appeared as a defensive substitute and gone 1-for-1 in the Mariners game on the 17th. He then served as a defensive replacement in three consecutive games from the 18th in Seattle through the 20th against the Dodgers, but did not get a plate appearance in those contests.
When he finally stepped to the plate, Song popped out to first base, leaving his season batting average at .211 (4-for-19).
The Padres gave up two runs to the Athletics in the top of the first, but Manny Machado tied the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first with two outs and a runner on first.
Oakland reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth on a double by Jack Gelloff and an RBI single by Henry Bolt, but San Diego evened things in the bottom of the fifth when Nick Castellanos blasted a solo homer to left.
San Diego shifted the momentum in the seventh. In the bottom of the frame, with one out, Ramón Laureano launched a solo shot over the left-field wall to give the Padres a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, with the bases loaded and nobody out, Gavin Sheets delivered a two-RBI hit to make it 6-3. With one out and runners on first and third, Xander Bogaerts added an RBI sacrifice fly for a seventh run.
In the bottom of the eighth, with two outs and runners on first and second, Song popped out to the first baseman.
Holding the lead, San Diego turned to Jeremiah Estrada in the top of the ninth, and he retired the side in order to close out the game.
