A Shiba Leads Morning Gatherings as Neighborhood Cats Arrive
At 7 a.m. each day, a quiet alley in the neighborhood stirs to life. The scene centers on Maru, a Shiba Inu with a grave expression, and the stray cats that gather around him. One by one, the cats sit before Maru with ears pricked; Maru watches back with a slow wag of his tail and a little nose twitch. Before long, it looks like a meeting is under way.
“At first I thought the cats were just wary of Maru,” his owner said. “But then, bit by bit, they began showing up at the same time and same place every day.”

Cats and Dogs—Friends?
Dogs and cats are often cast as natural enemies, but Maru and his feline companions have upended that notion. Their relationship began cautiously, but over time the cats started arriving earlier—sometimes waiting for Maru if he oversleeps, as though wondering when the host will appear.
Maru shows no aggression. He moves closer to touch noses, or shifts his position to make room, as if inviting the cats to settle in. The felines, in turn, seem comfortable; neighbors have even seen mothers bring kittens along.

Are They on ‘Neighborhood Patrol’?
They aren’t holding an official meeting, of course, but their intent expressions invite speculation. Observers imagine they might be swapping local intelligence—where a can of tuna was found, which cat is new to the area, or who that suspicious dog was that wandered through yesterday.
At times Maru sits rigidly upright and, if a cat dozes off or wanders, he gently nudges it back into place, a gesture that makes him look like the meeting’s moderator. “He really seems to be running the show. Like a boss,” a witness said.

Scenes From the ‘Meeting’ Ignite Social Media
The story quickly spread online. A neighbor’s casual video drew tens of thousands of views and comments such as, “Who’s that Shiba?” “I think my cat goes there, too,” and “Do they hang out after the meeting?”
Maru became an instant neighborhood celebrity, and the cats earned the affectionate label “Maru the Shiba’s Cat Club.” Fans even began designing Maru stickers and a logo for the cat gatherings.

A Busy Day for the Shiba
Maru keeps a busy daily routine. After the morning gathering he makes a short patrol around the neighborhood, naps during the day to recharge, and sometimes takes a brief evening walk with his feline companions. The evening strolls aren’t as solemn as the morning gatherings.
“Other dogs sometimes growl at cats, but Maru grew up with them and treats them like family,” his owner said. “From the cats’ perspective, Maru seems like a safe, trustworthy presence.”
