[MyDaily = Reporter Choi Byung-jin] José Mourinho, whose appointment as Real Madrid manager now appears imminent, has reportedly set his sights on Rodri of Manchester City.
Mourinho is expected to take charge at Real next season. Transfer-market expert Fabrizio Romano said on May 18 (KST) that Mourinho has reached a verbal agreement with the club and is set to sign a two-year deal. Mourinho previously managed Real in 2011–12, when he won La Liga and the Copa del Rey.
Real endured a turbulent season. A split over coach Xabi Alonso led to his exit, and tensions later flared between Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde. The club has moved to appoint Mourinho to restore discipline and stability.
Real plans to reshape the squad around Mourinho, and Rodri has emerged as a primary target. British outlet Football Insider reported on May 20 that Mourinho is keen to bring the Spain international to the Bernabéu.
Rodri has been at Manchester City since the 2019–20 season and is widely regarded as the world’s top defensive midfielder. He anchors City’s midfield with exceptional vision and precise passing, and he capped his rise by winning the Ballon d’Or in 2024.
Speculation about a possible departure has grown. Rodri’s contract runs through next year, and he is reportedly considering his options. City have offered a new deal, but uncertainty surrounding Pep Guardiola’s future has left matters unclear.

Football Insider added that doubts over Rodri staying at City have intensified and that Real are reportedly prepared to pay €60 million (about $64.2 million) to sign him — roughly 105 billion KRW (about $78.75 million).
