If you’re scouting October getaways in Japan, here are four cities that shine in autumn. October ushers out the summer heat and brings crisp breezes—perfect for outdoor adventures and strollable sightseeing.

Foliage timing and festivals shift by region, so throughout October you’ll find a wide range of scenery and seasonal events. Below, discover what makes each area a standout October destination and the sights you won’t want to miss.

Hokkaido

Hokkaido is the first region in Japan to greet autumn, so its fall colors arrive sooner than elsewhere. From mid-October, Sapporo and the surrounding mountains burst into vivid reds, oranges, and golds. Nearby Jozankei Onsen is a must for outdoor soaking with colorful valley views.

The ginkgo-lined avenue at Hokkaido University creates a golden tunnel that’s perfect for a leisurely walk. It’s also peak season for fresh seafood—think king crab and salmon—so food-focused travelers will be delighted. If you crave crisp air and sweeping landscapes, Hokkaido delivers.

Ibaraki

Just outside Tokyo, Ibaraki Prefecture is famous in October for the spectacular Kochia waves. Miharashi Hill in Hitachi Seaside Park transforms mid-month as roughly 30,000 Kochia bushes turn a vivid crimson—an Instagram-ready sight locals have long adored.

The red Kochia against bright blue skies makes for one of the season’s best photo ops, and fields of autumn cosmos add extra charm. The park’s wide grounds are perfect for a bike ride, and since it’s doable as a day trip from Tokyo, it’s easy to fit into your itinerary.

Kyoto

Kyoto isn’t at peak foliage yet, but the cooler weather makes it ideal for temple and garden hopping. Every year on October 22, the city celebrates Jidai Matsuri—one of Kyoto’s three major festivals—with an ornate historical procession you won’t want to miss.

If you’re chasing early color, head north to Ohara or Kurama. Arashiyama’s bamboo grove and Kiyomizu-dera are also delightful in October. I recommend Kyoto for travelers who want a mix of traditional culture and serene landscapes.

Fukuoka

Easy-to-reach Fukuoka enjoys clear, sunny days in October—perfect for short trips. Stroll Ohori Park to soak up early fall, then sample local bites at the yatai stalls along the Nakasu riverside after dark.

You can also take a quick trip to Yufuin or Beppu to unwind in hot springs set against autumn mountains. Yufuin’s Lake Kinrinko starts to show color in October, and the mist over the water creates a truly magical scene. With great shopping and a lively food scene, Fukuoka is ideal for travelers who want a compact but fulfilling fall escape.

We’ve rounded up four top Japanese destinations for October travel. With comfortable weather and a lineup of seasonal festivals, October might just be Japan’s best travel month. Check each region’s foliage timing and highlights in advance to pick the spot that best matches your plans.
