Namyangju City in Gyeonggi Province said it has completed emergency repairs on a leak in an aging water main—more than 25 years old—that caused road subsidence in front of Donong High School in Dasan-dong.
Residents reported the road collapse on the night of the 8th.
The city immediately carried out a site inspection, imposed traffic controls, installed safety fencing and launched an investigation into the leak.
The investigation found a leak in a water main more than 25 years old beneath the road. The city began repair work at once, conducting leak detection and excavation simultaneously.
Officials quickly isolated the leak, repaired the pipeline, stabilized the ground and repaved the roadway, completing restoration by the afternoon of the 9th.
During repairs, city teams prioritized public safety, carefully inspecting for voids beneath the road and assessing surrounding ground conditions.
Alongside the repairs, Namyangju is strengthening proactive safety management to prevent future ground subsidence.
Since last year, the city has expanded ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys and carried out focused inspections of areas vulnerable to subsidence.
Recent GPR surveys across a 50 km (about 31-mile) corridor identified 26 underground voids in advance, and the city has repaired them promptly, reinforcing its proactive response system.
The city is also working with the Korea Land and Geospatial Safety Authority to conduct detailed surveys of subsidence-prone areas and roads around large underground development sites. It carries out emergency inspections of vulnerable sections after heavy rains and manages safety around aging water and sewer pipelines.
Going forward, the city plans to continue reinforcing maintenance of aging water mains, intensify monitoring of at-risk areas and expand GPR surveys.
Acting Mayor Kim Sang-su said, “Immediately after the road sagged, the relevant departments were dispatched to the scene and focused on securing public safety. We will continue proactive inspections and strengthen maintenance of aging infrastructure to ensure a safe urban environment.”
