From X to Z: How ‘끝없는 사랑’ Bridges the Gap Between Generations in Korean Music

Daniel Kim Views

Generation X—those born from the late 1960s through 1980—are often described as the first generation to embrace consumption rather than frugality. Raised in relative prosperity, they developed strong individual identities and, as “digital immigrants,” moved from an analog upbringing into the digital age. Their wide-ranging tastes helped broaden the pop-music landscape. Drawing on 1990s Gayo Top 10 charts, we introduce the music they loved to Generation Z. [Editor’s note]

◆’Gayo Top 10′ — Week 2, May 1996: Noksaekjidae (Green Zone) — ‘Endless Love’

◆About the band Noksaekjidae:

Noksaekjidae debuted in 1994 as a male duo featuring Kwon Seon‑guk and Kwak Chang‑sun. Singer‑songwriter Kim Beom‑ryong produced their first album. Its title track, “I Will Love,” climbed to No. 1 on multiple music shows within a year, drawing wide attention.

Through the late 1990s they released a string of hits, including the second‑album lead “Endless Love,” follow‑ups like “Unprepared Farewell” and “It’s Okay,” and songs such as “I’ll Protect You,” “Legend of Autumn,” and “Yes, It’s Not Too Late.” At a time when dance music dominated the charts, Noksaekjidae stood out for powerful, vocal‑driven ballads.

In 1998 original member Kwon Seon‑guk departed; the group brought in Kim Areum as a guest and scored with their fourth album, “Yes, It’s Not Too Late.” After a fifth album the band went on hiatus. Kwon returned in 2003 for a sixth album, but the group disbanded later that year. After a six‑year gap, Kwak Chang‑sun—who had kept the name alive—recruited longtime friend Jo Won‑min and released a seventh album in 2009. That album marked the last time they released material under the Noksaekjidae name.

In 2016 original members Kwak Chang‑sun and Kwon Seon‑guk appeared together on JTBC’s Two Yoo Project — Sugarman. Today, the members work individually and continue to meet audiences through solo activities.

◆About “Endless Love”:

“Endless Love” is a track from their 1995 second studio album, Noksaekjidae II. It was written by composer Lee Seong‑hwan, who also composed the debut single “I Will Love.” After the album’s title track, “Unprepared Farewell,” became a hit, “Endless Love” repeatedly rose into contention for No. 1 on music shows.

The recording incorporates sound effects — a ringing phone, an ambulance siren, and life‑support machines. Composer Lee Seong‑hwan is reported to have based the song on the story of a husband who lost his wife in the 1995 Sampoong Department Store collapse. That backstory, combined with the song’s mournful lyrics, left a strong impression on listeners.
