Highways across South Korea are expected to be busier than usual as people head out to enjoy clear, sunny spring weather.

On May 9, the Korea Expressway Corporation estimated roughly 5.7 million vehicle trips on the nation’s highways.

Traffic congestion that begins between 6 and 7 a.m. is expected to peak between 11 a.m. and noon, then ease by late afternoon, around 5–6 p.m.

Roads heading away from Seoul are likely to be the most congested, particularly the Yeongdong and Seohaean (West Coast) expressways.

Traffic into Seoul is expected to build from midmorning (9–10 a.m.), peak in the early evening (5–6 p.m.), and start to clear after about 9–10 p.m.

Based on tollbooth data at 10 a.m., estimated travel times from Seoul to major regional cities are: ▲Seoul–Busan 5 hours 40 minutes ▲Seoul–Daegu 4 hours 46 minutes ▲Seoul–Gwangju 4 hours 30 minutes ▲Seoul–Daejeon 2 hours 40 minutes ▲Seoul–Gangneung 3 hours 20 minutes.

In the opposite direction, travel times from regional cities to Seoul were estimated at: ▲Busan–Seoul 5 hours ▲Daegu–Seoul 3 hours 59 minutes ▲Gwangju–Seoul 3 hours 32 minutes ▲Daejeon–Seoul 1 hour 50 minutes ▲Gangneung–Seoul 2 hours 59 minutes.
