For drivers in the Seoul metro area planning a weekend escape, long drives can feel like a chore. Between round-trip fuel costs and bumper-to-bumper highways, it’s easy to lose the motivation to go anywhere.

Enter Hwadam Forest in Gwangju, Gyeonggi — a roughly 40‑minute to one‑hour drive from central Seoul — which is pulling in day‑trippers like gravity with its lush May greenery and breezy visitor flow.

A 160,000‑square‑meter wilderness you can reach in about 40 minutes

If you take the Jungbu Expressway to the Gonjiam IC or exit the Seoul–Gwangju Expressway toward Docheok‑myeon, you’ll leave the concrete jungle behind and be greeted by sweeping, wooded slopes.

Developed by the LG Evergreen Foundation, Hwadam Forest is an ecological arboretum spanning 165,000 square meters (about 40.8 acres / 1.78 million sq ft). Park for free in the roomy public lot, and a short five‑minute uphill stroll leads you into a completely different world.

May is peak season here: more than 800 plant species and 26 themed gardens burst into fresh green. Lingering tulips and lilacs pepper the scenery with spring color against the new foliage.

Standouts include the exotic birch groves, where white trunks pop against vivid leaves, and the gardens and waterfalls whose rushing water adds a cooling soundtrack — all offering postcard moments without the need for a long road trip.

Monorail panoramic views that spare you the hike

The monorail is a big reason families and drivers flock here. Tackling the whole arboretum on foot would be tiring, but the monorail glides partway up the slope, making the trip relaxed and accessible.

Sit by the window and watch the forest unfold like a sweeping panorama — it’s a favorite backdrop for social posts and selfies.

The monorail reveals the three‑dimensional scale of the forest in a way walking alone can’t, and visitors keep sharing window‑framed shots across social channels.

Most visitors ride the first monorail section up near the summit, then stroll back down along gentle trails — the most efficient route that conserves energy.

Confirm your reservation before you set the GPS

It’s an irresistible day‑trip, but there’s a crucial heads‑up before you start the car.

Hwadam Forest doesn’t sell tickets at the gate — it operates on a strict, 100 percent advance‑reservation system. If you trust your GPS and show up without a booking, you’ll be sent back at the entrance.

If you’re planning a visit, buy adult admission (₩11,000 — about $8.25) and monorail tickets (₩5,000–₩9,000 — about $3.75–$6.75) in advance on the official website or app.

That reservation system keeps visitor numbers in check, so even weekend afternoons feel comfortable with parking and pleasant viewing — a real plus for drivers.

For the best experience, aim to arrive between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. for ideal light, soak up the forest, then wrap up the outing at a nearby café or restaurant for a perfect weekend drive.
