The Hanwha Eagles picked up their first win over the KIA Tigers this season.
Hanwha defeated KIA 7-2 on the road at Gwangju Kia Champions Field in a 2026 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League game on the 6th.
The victory improved Hanwha to 13-19 and kept them in ninth place while snapping a four-game losing streak to KIA this year.
The story was led by starter Ryu Hyun-jin. He worked six innings, throwing 85 pitches while allowing four hits (one home run), two walks and recording eight strikeouts with one run allowed, earning his third win of the season. He delivered controlled innings through the sixth, addressing the late-inning struggles that had been a concern recently.
At the plate, Shim Woo-jun was the offensive catalyst. Batting ninth, he ripped a two-run, go-ahead single in the top of the second and finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Hanwha struck early. In the top of the second, Kang Baek-ho drew a walk, Noh Si-hwan singled and Kim Tae-yeon bunted to move the runners into scoring position with one out. A grounder by Lee Won-seok led to the runner at third being thrown out at home, but a walk to Choi Jae-hoon loaded the bases. With two outs and the bags full, Shim lined a single to right that brought in two runs for the first lead of the game.
Hanwha added to the total in the third when Moon Hyun-bin homered, and in the fourth a two-out wild pitch by Oller produced two more runs to push the lead to 5-0.
Ryu, who had blanked KIA through five innings, surrendered a solo homer to Derlin Rodriguez with two outs in the sixth.
The bullpen preserved the edge the rest of the way. In the eighth, with two outs and a runner on second, Shim delivered an RBI single to add insurance, and Kang Baek-ho capped the scoring with a solo homer in the ninth.
For KIA, starter Oller was knocked around for five runs, and the lineup managed only scattered hits and never mounted a consistent threat. Derlin Rodriguez continued his personal surge by hitting homers in consecutive at-bats.
