Chanel’s latest sandal — which strips away almost the entire sole and has been dubbed the “naked shoe” — is turning heads. It pushes the low-profile trend for ultra-thin outsoles to an extreme.
U.S. outlet Fox News and other international media reported that Chanel debuted the sandal at its Cruise 2026–27 show in Biarritz, France, on April 28.
French-Belgian designer Mathieu Blazy is credited with the design. He removed large portions of the toe, upper and sole, leaving only the heel, heel counter and an ankle strap. Chanel says the sandal is slated for an official release in November.
International outlets nicknamed it the “naked shoe” or “shoeless shoe,” praising how it blurs the line between footwear and art. Vogue described the look as deliberately ambiguous and experimental.
Online reaction was mixed. Many questioned the sandal’s practicality for everyday wear, calling it more decorative than functional and ill-suited to urban streets.
The style ties into the broader low-profile movement, which favors shoes with very thin outsoles.
Critics argue the design is less about everyday usefulness and more about pushing creative boundaries — a statement piece meant to provoke.
Whether the retail version will mirror the runway pair remains uncertain. Several outlets predict Chanel may add a proper sole to make the shoe more commercially viable.
