Former Korean history instructor turned YouTuber Jeon Han-gil is facing a complaint from a civic group after asserting that North Korea intervened in the May 18 Gwangju pro-democracy movement.
On the 27th, the civic organization Citizens’ Action for Restoring Judicial Justice said it filed a complaint with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, accusing Jeon of violating the Special Act on the May 18 Democratic Movement.
Earlier, on the 22nd, Jeon said on his YouTube channel, “The May 18 Democratic Movement I have taught about until now was wrong.”
He added, “Wait and see. What newspaper is this? Sky Daily ran an exclusive: ‘May 18 was an insurrection led by the DJ faction and North Korea.'”
The civic group said he repeatedly spread false information and caused social unrest.
Police sought an arrest warrant accusing Jeon of making false claims about a specific politician on YouTube, but a court rejected the request, finding there was no risk of evidence tampering or flight.
