The Trump administration is reportedly preparing for Iran’s national soccer team to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
On the 16th (local time), U.S. political outlet Politico reported that Andrew Giuliani, director of the White House World Cup task force overseeing the administration’s preparations, told the publication in an interview that the administration is planning for Iran’s participation.
\”I don’t speak for the Iranian team,\” Giuliani said, \”but when I spoke with President Trump, the president invited the Iranian team here.\”
Referring to FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s recent comment at the CNBC Invest in America forum in Washington, D.C., that \”the Iranian team will definitely come,\” Giuliani added, \”So we expect the Iranian team to come here.\”
Giuliani said he expects the Iranian team to arrive in the United States by June 10 to enter a training camp in Tucson, Arizona, and then to travel to California and Washington state for their group-stage matches.
He also said Iran plans to play a pre-tournament friendly in Puerto Rico — a U.S. territory — and that the administration is handling visa issuance and other arrangements to ensure the match goes smoothly.
In the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, Iran will play all three of its group-stage matches in the U.S.
