The Democratic Party of Korea has confirmed former Buk-gu Mayor Lee Dong-kwon as its candidate for the June 3 local elections in Ulsan’s Buk-gu.
The Ulsan party chapter said on the 12th that Lee finished first after a two-day primary held on the 11th and 12th.
The primary pitted Lee against former city councilor Baek Woon-chan. Results were determined 50% by registered party-member votes and 50% by a public opinion poll.
Lee, the nominee, will face incumbent Buk-gu Mayor Park Cheon-dong of the People Power Party in their third head-to-head contest.
In the 2022 local elections, Park defeated Lee; in 2018, Lee beat Park.
With Lee’s nomination, the Ulsan chapter has finalized candidates for all five district and county chief posts: Jung-gu Mayor Park Tae-wan, Nam-gu Mayor Choi Deok-jong, Dong-gu Mayor Kim Dae-yeon, Buk-gu Mayor Lee Dong-kwon, and Ulju County Mayor Kim Si-uk.
