Discover the Thrill of Uljin’s Transparent Skywalk: A Must-Visit in 2026!

Climb the hill behind Hupo Port in Uljin, and you’ll find waves crashing beneath your feet and a wide, clear horizon unfolding ahead. The sweeping East Sea, the charm of a coastal village, and an age-old local legend come together to give Uljin a distinct vibe. When you need to step away from a busy routine, this is the kind of place to walk slowly and soak up the view.

At the heart of that scenery is the Deunggisan Skywalk. Perched on the ridge at the end of the hill behind Hupo Port, the structure soars about 20 m (66 ft) high and stretches 135 m (443 ft) long. Roughly 57 m (187 ft) of the walkway features a transparent tempered-glass floor, so with every step you can see the white waves and blue ocean directly beneath you. The effect is equal parts thrilling and liberating. Lift your gaze and the horizon seems endless; the Seonmyo Nangja legend and the lighthouse park add even more maritime atmosphere to the scene.

Walk along the path and you’ll spot a sign near the midpoint for Hupo Gatbawi, a rock said to grant “one wish.” It’s common to see visitors pausing, staring at the rock that has endured rough seas for generations, and quietly making a wish. At the end of the skywalk stands a sculpture inspired by the legend of Seonmyo Nangja, who threw herself into the sea for the monk Uisang and transformed into a dragon. The statue’s serene expression set against the blue sea makes it a favorite photo spot.

After the more suspenseful stretch of the skywalk, a cloud bridge leads into the calmer Deunggisan Park. The park also serves as an outdoor exhibition that explores lighthouse history from around the world. Models and displays include Korea’s first modern lighthouse, Palmi-Do in Incheon, France’s Cordouan Lighthouse (built in 1611), and a replica of the ancient Egyptian Pharos, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Walking among lighthouses with different shapes and backstories makes for a pleasant mix of sightseeing and a stroll.

Visitors often say the skywalk feels like walking above the sea. Social media posts and travel reviews frequently highlight the striking ocean view visible through the clear floor. At sunset, a crimson sky over the water creates a mood that’s completely different from daytime. The park’s well-kept paths make it a hit for family outings and romantic dates alike. Nearby Hupo Mural Village is worth a quick detour—its alleyway paintings add small delights and great photo ops.

No Uljin visit is complete without sampling the local food. Hupo Port is well-known for snow crab and red king crab, and many travelers come for the clean, slightly sweet flavor of crab caught fresh at the source. Fried rice mixed in a crab shell after tasting the meat is a tourist favorite. You’ll also find tender boiled octopus and tangy mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), both local staples. Uljin specialties like matsutake mushrooms and seaweed grown in ocean breezes also add regional flavor to the menu.

The Deunggisan Skywalk is open year-round, but hours change by season, so check before you go. From March through October it’s open 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with extended hours to 6:30 p.m. from June through August. From November through February, hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free, making it an easy stop on any itinerary.

Because the skywalk sits right on the sea, weather can force temporary closures. The area is closed during rain, snow, or strong winds to prevent accidents. If the glass floor hasn’t dried after rain, staff may keep it closed longer due to slip risks. If you’re planning a visit on an unsettled day, it’s smart to confirm whether the site is open.

Uljin’s Deunggisan Skywalk blends wide-open ocean views, the atmosphere of Hupo Port, and a mix of lighthouses and local legend. A slow walk while staring at the sea can help clear a cluttered mind. Meeting the distant horizon and the waves churning below your feet is an experience unique to this spot. As spring warms up, consider visiting Hupo Port with someone special and seeing for yourself what it feels like to walk above the sea.
