[Sports Today reporter Song O-jeong] Veteran actors Shin Goo and Park Geun-hyung will appear in a production of ‘The Merchant of Venice’.
The casting was announced during a rehearsal open house and press conference for the \”Theater Tomorrow Project\” held on the morning of the 7th.
Park Geun-hyung said he had been thinking about how to give back the support received during the 139-performance run of ‘Waiting for Godot’ with Shin Goo, and that impulse inspired this charity initiative. He added that he hopes the effort won’t be a one-off; if the July production of ‘The Merchant of Venice’ draws strong support, they have pledged to stage another benefit performance.
Watching rehearsal scenes from the Theater Tomorrow Project, Shin Goo and Park Geun-hyung expressed deep satisfaction. Shin Goo said it felt \”like being 60 again,\” and stressed that, above all, sincerity matters. Park Geun-hyung welcomed the participants into the world of theater and encouraged them, saying, \”Let’s make this a success together.\”
A separate audition will be held for 30 selected participants from the Theater Tomorrow Project. Actors chosen through that process will join Shin Goo and Park Geun-hyung onstage in ‘The Merchant of Venice.’
The play reunites Park Company — which previously mounted ‘Waiting for Godot’ — with director Oh Kyung-taek. Built on Shakespeare’s characteristic comic structure, the new production promises a concentrated exploration of law and justice, contractual obligation and human conflict. The run is scheduled for July 8 through August 9 at the National Theater’s Haeoreum Theater; additional casting will be announced later.
