PV5 Surpasses 8,000 Units in Q1, Emerges as a Hit
Sales Accelerate on Electric Cargo-Vehicle Subsidies
Global Push Underway…PV5 Poised to Shake Up PBV Market

Kia’s first purpose-built vehicle (PBV), the PV5, opened with strong early demand and has quickly taken root in the market.
Domestic first-quarter sales totaled 8,086 units, the second-highest result among Kia’s battery-electric models for the period.
In February alone, PV5 sales reached 3,967 units, making it Kia’s top-selling EV for the month and even outpacing some popular internal-combustion models.
Industry analysts say the results underscore the PBV concept’s market potential beyond a typical launch bump.
Electric + Commercial Hybrid…
‘Cargo’ Model Drives Sales

The PV5’s biggest strength is its adaptable architecture, designed for multiple use cases.
It’s offered in distinct variants — ‘Passenger’ for people movers, ‘Cargo’ optimized for logistics, and a wheelchair-accessible ‘WAV’ model.
The Cargo variant accounts for roughly 80% of total sales and has been the primary driver of the PV5’s strong performance.
Industry observers point to the combined appeal of lower running costs from electrification and the practicality of a commercial platform as key success factors.
“Subsidies Twice as Large”…
Price Competitiveness Is the Key Factor

Policy incentives have played a major role in driving the sales ramp-up.
The PV5 Cargo is classified as an electric cargo vehicle, qualifying it for national subsidies of at least 10,000,000 KRW (approximately 7,500 USD) (Seoul: 13,500,000 KRW (approximately 10,125 USD)).
That subsidy level is more than double what passenger electric cars receive, improving the PV5’s price competitiveness.
The government has increased the budget for electric cargo-vehicle subsidies through a supplementary appropriation, which should further strengthen that advantage.
As a result, upfront purchase costs have fallen markedly, and commercial demand has moved in rapidly.
Expanding to Japan and North America
PV5 Begins Serious Global PBV Push

Kia is accelerating the PV5 rollout beyond South Korea.
After Europe, a Japan launch is imminent and the company plans to expand sales into the Middle East and Africa.
Notably, Japan has boosted EV subsidies to as much as 1,300,000 JPY (approximately 8,710 USD), improving the market environment there.
Kia has also shown a wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) concept for North America, signaling potential entry into that market.
Industry executives see the PV5 not just as a new model but as a foundational piece for a broader mobility platform that could extend into logistics and mobility services.
