5 Key Strategies of Maritime AX: Transforming Korea’s Maritime Sector into an AI Powerhouse

On the 7th, Korea Maritime and Ocean University unveiled its Maritime AX (Maritime AI Transition) vision, positioning itself to lead the maritime sector’s migration to artificial intelligence.
The university says the vision responds to a global shift in which the maritime industry is rapidly reorganizing around data- and AI-driven intelligent platform models. The initiative aims to strengthen industrial competitiveness while simultaneously modernizing maritime security systems with intelligent technologies.
To carry out the plan, the university will pursue five core strategies: cultivating Maritime AX talent; building a national maritime data hub (K-MDP); establishing a Maritime AX research institute; fostering an AI innovation ecosystem; and expanding its global network.
In particular, the maritime data hub is intended to integrate vessel, port, logistics, weather, and security data. That integrated dataset will underpin AI services such as voyage optimization, logistics forecasting, and maritime surveillance.
The university also plans to operate research centers focused on autonomous navigation, smart ports, and maritime security, and to establish a collaboration framework spanning industry, academia, government, research institutes, and the military to pursue technology validation and commercialization in parallel.
The university presented a phased rollout: first, build educational programs and a robust data foundation; next, broaden industry–academia–government–research–military partnerships to deliver visible results; and finally, evolve into a global, standards-setting maritime AI hub.
Ryu Dong-geun, president of Korea Maritime and Ocean University, said, \”This strategy is not merely a university development plan; it is a platform strategy that will determine the future competitiveness of the nation’s maritime industry.\”
