A sports-club pool in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, abruptly closed without prior notice, leaving members and instructors facing financial losses.
On April 4, Uijeongbu Police said the pool — which had been serving about 600 people a day as recently as a week earlier — halted operations and locked its doors. Investigators found the facility without power and secured with padlocks.
Customers who had purchased long-term memberships worth several hundred thousand KRW (approximately $150–$675) have not received refunds. Police say approximately 100 members have reported losses so far, and they expect that number to rise given how recently the closure occurred.
About 10 swimming instructors reportedly quit after not receiving several months’ pay.
Members have filed criminal complaints alleging fraud, and police are investigating the circumstances.
The sports club said accumulated losses during the COVID-19 period prevented it from renewing the building lease, and it added that refunds will be processed based on its membership records.
