Employee Slapped at Large Supermarket
A woman in her 60s who slapped an employee at a large supermarket was fined by the court.
On the 2nd, Judge Heo Seong-min of the Busan District Court’s 10th Criminal Division announced that A (in her 60s), who was indicted on assault charges, was sentenced to a fine of ₩1,000,000 (about $750).
The court found that the victim’s testimony was detailed and consistent, and that CCTV footage captured the defendant’s hand moving toward the victim’s cheek.
It added that the offense was aggravated by the fact that the assault targeted an employee while she was working for an unreasonable reason, and that the sentence reflected the defendant’s prior similar convictions and the circumstances of the incident.
A is accused of slapping employee B (in their 20s) at around 1 p.m. on July 5, 2024, inside a large supermarket in Busan.
After finishing her purchase, A handed her metal suitcase to B and asked B to attach a “purchase complete” sticker. While inspecting the suitcase, B discovered a bag and a black envelope inside, concluded they were likely external items, and briefly set the suitcase on the floor.
According to the investigation, A protested, saying, “Do you know how much is in that bag you put on the floor?” and then suddenly struck B on the cheek. Even after B apologized, A continued to direct verbal abuse at the employee.
During the trial, the defense argued that A only raised her hand and did not make contact, but the court rejected that claim.
