Korean Air recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with French space company Exotrail to collaborate on a new orbit transfer vehicle (OTV) business. OTVs are the precision carriers that deliver small satellites—released from large launch vehicles—directly to their target orbits. With demand surging for launching constellations of small satellites, OTVs are becoming essential for deploying multiple payloads from a single heavy launcher into different orbits. The two companies will work together on high-value space services, including low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite transport and payload hosting, multi-orbit satellite deployment, and satellite life-extension and refueling. Korean Air plans to leverage the partnership to support micro-satellite swarm systems being developed for defense, capture commercial satellite demand, and expand its space-transportation business.

◆ Jeju Air upgrades safety management system

Jeju Air has strengthened its safety operations using last year’s data as a baseline. The airline analyzed 779 quality audits across operations, maintenance, cabin, flight operations control, and transport to identify risks early and dig into root causes—sharpening its overall safety-management system. It’s also boosting human-error prevention by actively using HFACS (Human Factors Analysis and Classification System), a data-driven tool for analyzing human factors. Jeju Air has completed preparations for the risk-based IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) certification scheduled for the second half of the year—part of IATA’s next-generation approach to make aviation safety oversight more effective.
