[Sports Today reporter Kim Tae-hyung] Singer Sim Soo-bong appeared as the first original artist on JTBC’s Hidden Singer 8.
JTBC’s season premiere on the 31st showcased Sim going head-to-head with a lineup of vocal impersonators.
When Sim walked onstage, host Jeon Hyun-moo laughed, \”After so many years on TV, this is the first time I’m meeting you in person.\”
Sim replied, \”This is my first appearance on JTBC, so I’m very excited. I’m honored to be invited to such a special program, and I don’t think I’ll ever forget today.\”
Explaining why she agreed to appear, she said she had launched a \”New Senior Project\” to give songs to younger artists. \”I first gave the song ‘Tears Fall’ to Song Ga-in,\” she said. \”I planned to give the next song to Son Tae-jin, who is like family. I gave him a song, but he didn’t sing it, so I’m rewriting the lyrics.\” (Sim and Son Tae-jin are great-aunt and grandnephew.)
Sim added, \”When you give songs to younger singers, you have to give them something that fits them. I felt that when I handed over my own songs, they often went unsung.\”
Comedian Kim Kwang-kyu quipped, \”If Tae-jin won’t take it, I’ll take the song,\” drawing laughter with his eagerness.
When Jeon asked how he should address her — \”Should I call you ‘teacher’?\” — Sim answered, \”Call me Subong. You can call me ‘older sister’ if you prefer.\”
Jeon grinned, \”I’ll call you Subong, older sister.\” He then pointed to the audience and joked, \”We didn’t bring a million flowers for our Subong older sister, but we prepared about a hundred.\” Sim smiled and said, \”It looks like more than a hundred. Thank you.\”
Jeon noted, \”We’ve been trying to book you since we launched Hidden Singer in season 1, but it only came together now.\” Sim responded, \”I never said no.\” Comedian Song Eun-i quipped whether the invitation had been lost in the mail.
Jeon continued, \”Since season 1, 14 years ago, there have been talented impersonators of Sim Soo-bong. We kept knocking, but it didn’t happen. We waited so long some impersonators even shifted age groups.\”
On her remark that she wasn’t fond of her so-called \”ok-guseul\” (jade-bead) voice, Sim recalled, \”When I tried to imitate others, I used to scream and shout. Later I noticed there’s bone beside the nose, but mine is hollow. That empty space makes a strained, nasal sound, and I realized that only later.\”
