Hyundai Motor Co. has revised its plan to regain leadership in the small-SUV segment.

The company has kicked off development of the Kona’s third-generation, opting to skip a mid-cycle facelift and proceed directly to a full redesign.

Observers say the decision signals Hyundai’s intention to overhaul the Kona’s product proposition and brand image, not simply update the existing model.

Reality: Trailing the Seltos

Pressure to Restore Competitiveness

The strategic shift comes as competition in the segment intensifies.

Kia’s Seltos, part of the same corporate family, has consistently outsold the Kona in the domestic market, and the Kona has yet to secure a clear advantage despite a sales rebound.

Imported electric small SUVs, such as the Volvo EX30, have also been encroaching rapidly, squeezing the Kona’s market position.

Hyundai appears to have concluded that incremental updates would not be enough to restore competitiveness.

The redesign is more than a cosmetic refresh.

Hyundai has set up a dedicated task force to reexamine cost structure, product features and the user experience from the outset of the program.

The plan is to rethink the platform, powertrain and digital user experience to deliver a fundamentally different Kona.

Expect a sharper design language and stronger brand positioning aimed at younger buyers.

Small SUVs are no longer just entry-level cars.

They serve as a pivotal gateway for electric and hybrid vehicle adoption and provide broad consumer touchpoints.

For Hyundai, the Kona is not merely a volume model; it plays a strategic role in advancing electrification technologies and shaping the brand’s image.

Hyundai aims to launch the third-generation Kona in March–April next year. Development is underway, and industry observers will be watching to see whether the new generation can shake up the small-SUV market.
