[Sports Today reporter Im Si-ryeong] BTS charmed American viewers on a high-profile U.S. talk show with playful banter and commanding performances, while seamlessly showcasing Korean culture.

On March 26–27, BTS appeared on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. It was their first official talk-show appearance since releasing their fifth studio album, ARIRANG.

The group ignited the audience with a surprise entrance from the back of the crowd. The members embraced host Jimmy Fallon — reunited after four years and eight months — underlining their close bond. The episode was saturated with the K-culture elements the band introduced: they explained that Koreans remove their shoes at home and presented Fallon with a pair of \”K-slippers\” they had prepared. Fallon put them on and continued the interview in a relaxed, at-home manner. For the Guggenheim Museum performances, organizers placed floor cushions instead of chairs so the audience could enjoy the show seated on the floor — a striking fusion of New York’s iconic contemporary art space and a distinct Korean sensibility.

The broadcast’s centerpiece was a performance of the new single \”SWIM,\” staged across the museum. The members descended the spiral ramp one by one before converging on the central stage. After an elegant, natural opening that showcased each member’s presence, the chorus landed with crisp, direct choreography that left a strong impression. Wave-shaped lighting sweeping across the walls visualized the song’s themes and added artistic depth. On the follow-up track \”2.0,\” they delivered a concentrated performance defined by weighty movement and meticulous tempo control — a level of focus unique to the group. The museum erupted in thunderous singalongs, and the members conveyed profound, language-transcending emotion with composed stagecraft.

In the interview, the members reflected on reuniting as a full group after a long hiatus. \”Having the members by my side definitely gives me strength and confidence. It felt like meeting family,\” they said, expressing deep affection. They captured the moment of coming back together after the break with a single, emphatic word: \”Finally.\” Looking ahead to their upcoming world tour, they promised that every stop would be a highlight and said the shows would give fans chills.

Introducing the new record, they explained that they wanted to show where they began and where their roots lie. About the title track \”SWIM,\” they said it draws out thoughts that live in the corner of the mind: everyone faces different waves in life, but the song reflects a love of life and an attitude of continuing to swim through them. They expressed a belief that music made with sincerity — in lyrics, melody and choreography — will resonate anywhere.

Meanwhile, BTS’s fifth studio album ARIRANG sold approximately 4.17 million copies in its first week, according to Hanteo Chart, setting a new group record. The release delivered an overwhelming impact that belies a 3-year, 9-month hiatus. The title track \”SWIM\” held the No. 1 spot on Spotify’s Daily Top Songs Global chart for six consecutive days (March 20–25). In Seoul, they are currently running \”BTS THE CITY ARIRANG SEOUL,\” a public project for citizens to enjoy together.
