[Sports Today reporter Lim Si-ryeong] ‘Betting on Fact’ offers viewers a framework to distinguish fake news. All eyes are on whether Jang Dong-min, who has taken on a new challenge, can prove he remains a formidable competitor in this news-survival format.

On the 26th, wavve held an online press conference for its new original survival program ‘Betting on Fact.’ In attendance were Producer Kim Min-jong; comedians Jang Dong-min and Lee Yong-jin; Professor Jin Jung-kwon; broadcaster Jung Young-jin; singer-actor Ye-won; political YouTuber Hellmouse; former Democratic Party Supreme Council member Park Sung-min; and former People Power Party spokesperson Kang Jeon-ae.

‘Betting on Fact’ places eight contestants—isolated from the outside world—in a reality news game where they must judge the veracity of news items. The cast ranges from entertainers and actors to political YouTubers and former politicians, who will debate and compete for the win.

Producer Kim Min-jong said he selected participants with diverse viewpoints because people apply different standards when judging fake news, and those standards stem from their varied backgrounds. He noted that the lineup includes figures from different parties and from both political and entertainment circles—people who would not normally cross paths in private—and that assembling them to determine what is real in a news-survival setting would be compelling television.

Jang Dong-min, a veteran winner of several survival shows, said he was drawn to this program’s format. He explained that at this point another typical survival show felt burdensome, but because this was uncharted territory he found it appealing and his competitive drive was ignited.

He added that the cast makes the outcome hard to predict. Whereas other survival shows often feature familiar contestants, this one carries a very different energy, making it difficult to gauge, he said.

Lee Yong-jin said he has been reading print newspapers for about three years and that he agreed to appear on impulse. He described the show as an opportunity to test his intellect. Ye-won, appearing on a survival-variety show for the first time, said the lineup includes people she might never meet privately, and she was curious about their perspectives and what she could learn from them.

Professor Jin Jung-kwon said he initially hesitated to join but accepted because the topic—fake news—piqued his interest. He joked that once he arrived on set he regretted it a lot. Political YouTuber Jung Young-jin said the production demonstrated how a single news item can be manipulated, showing that altering a few words can create fake news. He added that simply having Jang Dong-min on the show will raise expectations; for greater entertainment, Jang should be spectacularly undone—otherwise, we all risk looking foolish.

Producer Kim said ‘Betting on Fact’ aims to do more than entertain: it also exposes the confirmation bias within each of us. He described the show as accessible, sharp, and flavorful, and said that watching the players confront fake news will help convey that message effectively.

Jang Dong-min said he expects the program to deliver both entertainment and shocks and encouraged viewers to have high expectations. He urged stronger action against fake news, saying governments should work to stop it. He added that regular viewing of ‘Betting on Fact’ will help audiences develop the judgment to separate fact from falsehood, and that fake news must be eliminated. He expressed the view that everyone nationwide should watch the show.
