[Sports Today Reporter Im Si-ryeong] Kim Dong-wan, a member of veteran K-pop group Shinhwa, issued an apology after a string of provocative social media posts that had alienated some fans and drawn his former manager into a public dispute.

On the 24th, Kim posted an apology on his social media account.

He wrote, “I deeply apologize to anyone whose feelings I upset because of recent events. If my words or actions made anyone uncomfortable, I take full responsibility. I sincerely reflect on this and will act with greater responsibility in every word and action going forward.”

Kim has long used his social accounts to speak bluntly; his remarks have repeatedly divided audiences — praised by some as principled and criticized by others as reckless.

The actor and singer, who has appeared on KBS2’s variety program Men Who Run the Household, drew particular backlash for comments such as: “I wish the variety show offers would stop. I’m not confident in being funny, and I don’t want to put my real stories in front of the public. Can’t I just live quietly?” Those remarks prompted accusations that he was effectively boycotting variety work and were called disrespectful by those who depend on such bookings.

His statements on legalizing and regulating prostitution also sparked controversy. Kim argued, “In trying to eliminate entertainment districts, the whole country is becoming one. We should acknowledge and regulate them.” Online users then unearthed past instances of his public support for Lee Su of MC the Max — who previously faced public scrutiny over alleged underage prostitution — which intensified criticism. Kim also faced backlash for publicly praising MC Ddingdong, a repeat drunk-driving offender who was accused of assaulting an online streamer during a broadcast; critics called that endorsement tone-deaf.

Not everyone defended Kim. A former manager identified only as A escalated the debate with a post accusing him of repeated problematic behavior. “Years ago and now… how are you still the same?” A wrote. “Drinking and doing Clubhouse and making headlines; drinking and going live and fighting with fans. This time, did he want to be a hero or is he out of his mind — there were problems with drunk driving, and recently he cheered on the MC who assaulted a streamer during a live broadcast? And he blocks people who tell the truth.”

Kim responded quickly, warning, “If the spread of false information continues, I will take all civil and criminal legal measures.” A shot back that talk of falsehoods and legal action was “laughable,” saying there are many stories but they had been kept quiet to avoid escalating the issue — turning the dispute into a public contest over the facts.

Ultimately, Kim bowed to the mounting controversy and pledged, “I’ll take responsibility for every word I say.”

The developments coincided with Shinhwa’s 28th anniversary. On the same day he issued the apology, Kim performed a busking set at the outdoor stage on Jandi Square in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, telling the crowd he intends to act responsibly so he can return to larger, more prominent stages.
