As the line between office wear and everyday clothing blurs, demand for pieces that are both comfortable and polished has surged. Rather than strictly separating formal and casual, consumers are increasingly seeking versatile items that work in multiple settings.
On the 25th, the Korea Federation of Textile Industries reported that spending on casual apparel from March through November last year reached KRW 18.86 trillion (about 14.145 billion USD). With remote and flexible work on the rise and dress codes loosening, the workleisure (Work + Leisure) trend — which breaks down the barrier between office wear and everyday clothes — has become a major force in consumer behavior.
In response, SPA labels like Topten and Uniqlo, along with sports and outdoor brands such as Descente, are expanding product lines that blend functionality with design and are stepping up efforts to capture this market.
Topten, under Shinsung Tongsang, has put its functional Superstretch pants front and center. Built with four-way stretch fabric and a banded waistband, the pants boost mobility and are engineered to cut down on discomfort during long periods of sitting or frequent movement.
The brand also prioritized a clean, tailored look. Using low-wrinkle, easy-care fabrics and offering fits like straight, jogger, cargo, and wide, Topten widened the selection for consumers. By marrying function with style, the company aims to capture demand for semi-business attire as well.
Industry insiders expect this shift toward high-utility pieces to continue amid ongoing economic uncertainty.
An industry source said, \”As fashion consumption moves from chasing trends to prioritizing utility, competition over technology and materials among brands is becoming more important.\” They added that workleisure looks are likely to spread beyond SPA labels into sports and outdoor lines as well.
