Shin Soo-sik, professor emeritus at Korea University’s Business School, died on the 21st at Korea University Anam Hospital. He was 84.
Professor Shin, a native of Uiseong County in North Gyeongsang Province, earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in commerce from Korea University and pursued further studies at the University of Cologne in Germany. He taught at Korea University from 1971 to 2007 and held leadership posts including dean of the Business School, dean of the Graduate School of Labor Studies, and president of the Korean Society of Insurance.
His 1974 book, Korean Insurance, published from his doctoral dissertation, examined insurance from a corporate-management perspective and is regarded as a foundational work that helped establish insurance studies as an independent academic field. His research on social insurance during his time in Germany also informed later reforms to Korea’s National Pension and National Health Insurance systems.
He authored several books, including Social Security and Health Insurance (1974), Theory of Social Security (1978), National Welfare Pension Theory (1979), and Insurance Management (1983). He received the 3rd Daesan Insurance Award in 2008. From 1981 to 1984 he served as manager of Korea University’s baseball team, guiding the program through its heyday when players such as Sun Dong-yeol and Park No-jun were active.
He is survived by his wife, Yun Hye-sook; his daughter, Shin Ryeong, a professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Suwon; and his son, Shin Dae-uk, a director at SGIS KOREA. The wake is being held in Room 301 of the funeral hall at Korea University Anam Hospital, and the funeral procession is scheduled for 5:00 a.m. on the 24th.
He will be laid to rest at Yeraewon in Dongducheon.
