In 2007, South Korea was captivated by MBC’s sitcom Unstoppable High Kick and the craze around the character “Kkwa-dang” Min-jung.

But just one month after the series ended, actress Seo Min-jung—at the peak of her fame—surprised fans by announcing her marriage and effectively stepping away from the spotlight, then boarding a plane for New York.

Decided to marry after meeting him just three times

Seo married her husband after meeting him only three times. At a point when she was tired of blind-date setups where suitors—aware she was a celebrity—would ask her to sing or rudely probe her bank balance, their encounter felt refreshingly different.

Her husband, Ahn Sang-hoon, reportedly didn’t even know she was an actress.

When she told him her profession, he casually replied, “I’ve never seen you on TV—were you an extra?” His offhand reaction struck Seo as an honest, surprisingly grounding response.

I miss the air in Korea

Eighteen years into her marriage, Seo Min-jung remains focused on life in New York as a wife and mother.

In a recent social media update, she wrote that she’s been finding small pleasures—like taking in Broadway shows—while enduring an unusually harsh New York winter.

She also admitted, with real longing, that she hasn’t been back to Korea in three years and misses the crisp winter air there.
