[Sports Today Reporter Song Oh-jung] Former BIGBANG member T.O.P (born Choi Seung-hyun) has announced the resumption of his solo activities. Once hinting at retirement from the entertainment industry, he is now moving forward with a music comeback following a return to acting.
On the 20th, his agency Topspot Pictures confirmed T.O.P’s solo comeback. He will release his first full-length solo album, ANOTHER DIMENSION, on April 3. It marks his debut studio LP as a solo artist, and he was heavily involved in producing the record.
The news naturally drew public attention given his past statements and controversies. In 2017, T.O.P was given a 10-month prison term, suspended for two years, after being convicted on charges of habitual marijuana use. Authorities said he smoked marijuana on four occasions at his home in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. At the time, he was serving as a conscripted policeman; following the incident he was relieved of duty and completed his military obligation as a social service worker.
A drug scandal involving a member of one of Korea’s most popular groups left many fans disillusioned. The fallout intensified when T.O.P exchanged heated messages with netizens and posted replies suggesting he had no intention of returning—writing, \”I don’t plan to return\”—and later saying during a livestream, \”I won’t make a comeback in Korea. I won’t come back at all,\” comments that added to the shock.
His casting in season 2 of the global hit series Squid Game prompted fierce criticism. In a subsequent interview, T.O.P addressed the episode, saying he regretted speaking rashly while struggling through a dark period and lacking good judgment at the time he made those retirement remarks.
Reports in January that he was working on an album signaled that his comeback would extend beyond acting and into a full-fledged return to music. Peers in the industry have shown support: singer Nana has already filmed a role in his new music video, and G-Dragon drew attention by liking a post about T.O.P’s comeback, a subtle show of backing.
This year also marks BIGBANG’s 20th anniversary. With a commemorative global tour on the calendar, T.O.P’s confirmed return has heightened expectations among the group’s fans.
