Regarding the future of Munhak Stadium, Mayor Yoo stated, “We’re evaluating whether to simply renovate the existing facilities or transform it into a dedicated arena space.”
During his visit to the district office on the afternoon of the 10th, Mayor Yoo addressed questions about the repurposing of Munhak Stadium, which will be vacated when the SSG Landers baseball team relocates to Cheongna Dome in 2028. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive review, including professional consultations, to determine the most viable approach.
As municipalities nationwide compete to attract or construct arenas capable of hosting over 50,000 people, Incheon is exploring the possibility of renovating Munhak Stadium into a ‘K-Culture Arena.’ Related article: Incheon’s ‘K-Pop Mecca’ Aspirations: Plans for a New 70,000-seat Arena
Mayor Yoo, accompanied by District Chief Lee Young-hoon, both sporting red scarves, explained, “The scarves were likely provided due to the cold in this aging building. While it’s currently the oldest facility in the area, the new building will be state-of-the-art. We aim to create more than just a government office – a true community space for residents.”
Addressing the potential relaxation of height restrictions around Subong Park, Mayor Yoo stated, “While the exact timeline needs to be determined, we’ve established a framework to ease unnecessary regulations while promoting balanced regional development.” He committed to thoroughly examining the issue.
The district presented Mayor Yoo with a calligraphy scroll featuring the idiom ‘Mabu Jeongje,’ meaning ‘a running horse doesn’t stop its hooves’ – symbolizing continuous progress.
The district also proposed several initiatives, including ▲ the Biryong-Gonggam 2080 Urban Regeneration New Deal project, ▲ public parking lot development in Juan 4-dong’s vacant house area, ▲ a new public parking facility in Juan 7-dong, ▲ a multi-purpose cultural community center in Yonghyeon and Hakik Block 1, ▲ administrative property exchanges between city and district, and ▲ revitalization strategies for Incheon Munhak Stadium.
Mayor Yoo emphasized, “We’re at a crucial juncture for revitalizing our historic downtown. I urge everyone to support Michuhol District’s development, as it’s at the heart of this transformation.”
