Democratic Party members serving their second term met with party leader Jeong Cheong-rae, insisting that talks about merging with the Justice Innovation Party should cease immediately.
Following the “meeting between the leader and second-term lawmakers” at the National Assembly on the 10th, Rep. Kang Jun-hyun informed reporters, “The general consensus among lawmakers is that it would be best to immediately stop merger discussions and focus on national priorities.”
Kang elaborated, “There was a sense of urgency for a swift decision today, with calls for the party leader to make a prompt resolution. While the idea of a member vote was mentioned, most agreed to resolve the issue internally.”
He further stated, “While merging might be the right move eventually, concerns were raised about the current justification and timing. The prevailing opinion was that the leadership should avoid causing public confusion at this point.”
Kang noted, “No one opposed the principle of merging, but the timing was the main issue.”
During the meeting, Leader Jeong reportedly announced, “I’ve called a Supreme Council meeting for this afternoon, and we’ll reach a prompt decision.”
In his opening remarks, Jeong said, “Whether you support or oppose the merger with the Innovation Party, I believe it stems from party loyalty. It’s crucial to hear all lawmakers’ and party members’ views and follow a democratic process to reach the right conclusion.”
He added, “While Democratic lawmakers play a vital role, the party ultimately belongs to its members. We should have consulted them through a proper process. Currently, we’re referencing various polls and statistical indicators to gauge opinion.”
The Democratic Party plans to hold a general assembly at the National Assembly on the morning of the same day to discuss the merger issue. They aim to reach a conclusion at the Supreme Council meeting later that afternoon.
