Kang, who recently left the Democratic Party, sent a letter to his former colleagues today (February 10). In it, he apologized for causing concern and expressed his intention to clarify discrepancies reported in the media.
Addressing the campaign fund allegations, Kang stated, “100 million KRW (75,000 USD) is not worth risking my political career or my life.” He explained that a shopping bag received as a customary gift remains untouched in his home’s storage room.
Kang revealed that upon receiving a complaint call from candidate Kim Kyung, he realized the gift’s value was 100 million KRW (75,000 USD). He immediately instructed his aide to return the money and informed the committee’s secretary.
Emphasizing his multiple attempts to return the funds, Kang argued, “If I had demanded 100 million KRW (75,000 USD), I wouldn’t have met in a conspicuous hotel café. If I had requested campaign funds and received them in installments, there would be no reason to verify and return them individually.”
Earlier, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office requested an arrest warrant for Kang and former city councilor Kim Kyung on charges of violating political funds law.
