In an open letter titled “To the Esteemed Citizens of Gwangju,” Mayor Moon stated, “I have decided not to run in the upcoming Buk-gu mayoral election or the special mayoral election for the integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju region.” He explained, “While I had envisioned a ‘new Gwangju’ with the goal of addressing our citizens’ economic challenges, changes in the political landscape and my own limitations have led me to this decision.”
Mayor Moon acknowledged, “Although I was among the first to advocate for the administrative merger of Gwangju and Jeonnam last October and November, I inadvertently caused confusion during the unexpectedly rapid integration process, particularly regarding the withdrawal of my resignation as Buk-gu mayor. I sincerely apologize for any concerns this may have caused.”
Looking ahead, Mayor Moon emphasized his commitment to finalizing the administrative integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam. He stated, “My final duty will be to ensure the successful integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam, which represents a critical juncture for our region’s development. This merger is the first step in transforming our city from one that loses its youth to one that creates opportunities and prosperity.”
Mayor Moon further noted, “This integration is not an end, but a beginning. It is crucial for Gwangju to uphold its role as a beacon of democracy and to emerge as the powerhouse of southern Korea.”
Expressing gratitude to his supporters, Mayor Moon said, “I am deeply thankful to the residents of Buk-gu who have placed their trust in me over the past eight years. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to everyone who has joined me in the pursuit of positive change for Gwangju.”
In conclusion, he added, “I am committed to fulfilling my responsibilities to ensure that this decision not to run marks not an end, but a new chapter in our city’s progress.”
