Jin-sook Lee Hosts Book Launch in Daegu
Questions Arise About Potential Mayoral Run
Lee Responds Cautiously, Avoiding Direct Answers

Former Korea Communications Commission Chair Jin-sook Lee has re-entered the political spotlight by hosting a book launch event in Daegu. When pressed about her potential candidacy for Daegu mayor, Lee carefully sidestepped the question, citing concerns about election law violations. The event took place on February 9th at the Grand Hotel in Daegu. Before the launch, Lee fielded questions from reporters about her mayoral aspirations. In response, Lee stated, “Discussing a mayoral run here could potentially violate election laws,” adding, “It’s inappropriate to discuss candidacy plans now, as they can always change.”
Lee emphasized that the event’s primary purpose was to introduce her book to readers. Despite her reluctance to make official statements, the event’s atmosphere fueled political speculation. A close associate of Lee revealed, “She intends to run for Daegu mayor, and if Daegu and Gyeongbuk administratively merge, she plans to run as the unified leader.”

During the launch, Lee highlighted her deep ties to Daegu, stating, “Though born in Seongju, Gyeongbuk, I’ve lived in Daegu since second grade, attending school through university here.” She added, “Daegu has shaped my very DNA,” expressing her profound connection to the city. Lee praised Daegu as a bastion of conservative values, emphasizing “responsibility, order, community spirit, respect for tradition, and perseverance.” She stressed the importance of restoring civic pride and pondered how to preserve hard-won democratic freedoms while contributing to South Korea’s future.

The event drew approximately 800 attendees, including notable political figures. The presence of potential mayoral candidates like former Dong-gu Mayor Lee Jae-man and ex-National Assembly member Hong Seok-jun fueled speculation about the event’s political undertones. Local pundits view this as a strategic move preceding a mayoral bid. Lee’s potential candidacy has been a topic of discussion in Daegu for some time, particularly given her consideration of a mayoral run in the 2022 local elections. As such, there’s growing interest in how Lee will navigate her political future and what impact she might have on Daegu’s upcoming mayoral race.
