On June 2, The New York Times, citing a White House statement, reported the order is intended to reinforce U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence and to protect critical infrastructure and national security systems from cyber threats. At its core, the order establishes a government pre-release review framework for high-performance AI models developed by private companies. <\/p>\n

The directive largely mirrors a proposal Trump had intended to announce on May 21 but postponed; it shortens the original 90-day review window to 30 days. Under the order, the Treasury Department, the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Homeland Security will develop confidential benchmarking procedures. AI developers are required to set up voluntary cooperation mechanisms with the government, determine whether their in-development models are subject to review, and provide the government with access up to 30 days before release so officials can inspect models for security flaws. <\/p>\n

Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and other U.S. tech firms welcomed the finalized amendment while saying they will monitor its effects on development and deployment. <\/p>\n
