A dissident outlet reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian submitted his resignation to the office of Supreme Leader Moztaba Hameinei. Iran’s domestic media immediately dismissed the report as false. <\/p>\n
On the 31st of last month (local time), Iran International, a UK-based, opposition-leaning outlet, cited anonymous sources saying President Pezeshkian submitted a resignation to the Supreme Leader’s office, arguing that the president and the government had been excluded from key national decision-making. <\/p>\n
Iran International also reported that Pezeshkian told officials that a hard-line faction within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had filled the resulting power vacuum, and that under those conditions he could not effectively run the government or meet his legal responsibilities \u2014 so he intended to resign immediately. The outlet said it could not confirm whether Moztaba Hameinei accepted the resignation. <\/p>\n
Iranian state media and presidential office officials uniformly denied the claim. The semi-official Tasnim news agency, citing government sources, said, \\”The president has not resigned and continued his duties today,\\” adding that his schedule would proceed as normal. Tasnim also accused Iran International of ties to Israel’s Mossad. <\/p>\n
Tasnim released video it described as footage from a government meeting in which Pezeshkian said, \\”As long as I breathe, I will continue. We must be on the ground and manage the situation.\\” Seyyed Mehdi Tabatabai, head of the presidential communications office, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that President Pezeshkian \\”will never step back from serving the people.\\” <\/p>\n
Tensions within Iran’s leadership have flared repeatedly in the press. Opposition, Israeli, and Western outlets report that, after the assassination of former Supreme Leader Ali Hameinei and with Moztaba Hameinei wounded, hard-line elements of the IRGC have effectively taken charge\u2014overseeing diplomatic engagement with the United States and suppressing domestic dissent. Iran International added that, while Pezeshkian is the nominal president, he wields little real power and has struggled to form a cabinet. <\/p>\n
In response to the reports, Pezeshkian posted on his official social media account without explicitly saying whether he had resigned, speaking in measured terms. On X he wrote, \\”Facing great challenges is impossible without enduring hardship.
