Instagram ranked first as the app they open first in the morning (41.0%) and the app they use most just before sleep (38.2%). In short, they move between platforms fluidly according to context and purpose.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Use of communication tools is sharply divided by function. For conversations with friends, Instagram (48.9%) and KakaoTalk (47.7%) are used at similar rates, but they serve different roles: DMs handle light, spontaneous exchanges, while KakaoTalk is reserved for weightier conversations that demand records and accountability.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Contrary to the stereotype of \u201ccall phobia,\u201d voice calls outpaced KakaoTalk when communicating with parents\u201454.2% versus 40.8%\u2014indicating that close family ties still favor traditional, voice\u2011based contact.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The report\u2019s most revealing finding concerns so\u2011called \u201cread\u2011and\u2011ignore\u201d and \u201cdon\u2019t\u2011read\u201d behaviors. Beneath Gen Z\u2019s outward coolness lies a nuanced practice of emotional regulation.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>About 60% of respondents said they had felt guilt or anxiety over read\u2011and\u2011ignore or don\u2019t\u2011read behavior. But the feelings behind those actions are not uniform. Respondents cited reasons such as \u201cI\u2019m sorry but I had no choice\u201d (32.3%), \u201cI just didn\u2019t feel like it\u201d (27.0%), and \u201cI was tired and needed a break\u201d (23.8%). The similar weight of these responses suggests read\u2011and\u2011ignore is not a single intent but a complex, context\u2011dependent reaction. For Gen Z, silence on messaging apps functions less as dismissal than as an emotional comma\u2014a pause to manage relational fatigue.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Han Yoon\u2011jin, director at PrainGlobal, said Gen Z\u2019s communication may look fast and light, but beneath it lies a complex grammar of emotion management aimed at considering others and sustaining relationships. She added that the report is significant because behaviors previously interpreted as \u201ccutting off,\u201d such as read\u2011and\u2011ignore and silence, are in fact deliberate strategies for maintaining ties.
