(Photo: Yonhap)<br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On May 29, Trade, Industry and Energy Minister Kim Jung-gwan wrote on social media that \u201cthe race in the artificial intelligence (AI) era will be decided by overwhelming speed and scale,\u201d and that \u201cnow is a pivotal moment to channel the profits generated by the semiconductor industry into productive reinvestment for the future.\u201d He warned that \u201ceven a single missed investment opportunity could destabilize the industrial ecosystem and push our companies onto an irreversible path of decline,\u201d adding, \u201cwhat we need now is decisiveness, not hesitation; concentration, not dispersion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Minister Kim\u2019s comments are being read as the Industry Ministry\u2019s response to Labor Minister Kim Young-hoon\u2019s call for discussion on the \u201csocial distribution of excess profits by large corporations.\u201d At a May 27 press briefing, Labor Minister Kim said, \u201cThe only viable solution for socially distributing large firms\u2019 excess profits is social dialogue,\u201d and announced plans for an emergency forum hosted by the Labor Ministry on June 1.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The Blue House has signaled support for airing the issue publicly. In a recent briefing, Blue House spokesperson Kang Yoo-jung said, \u201cThe labor minister raised the need for performance-based distribution from a labor policy perspective, while the industry minister will view excess operating profits and profit issues from an industry standpoint.\u201d She added, \u201cThe Blue House hopes the upcoming forum will create space for broad public discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The main opposition People Power Party pushed back immediately. Choi Bo-yoon, the party\u2019s central campaign publicity chief, said in a statement that the proposal represents \u201ca dangerous step toward state intervention that would shake the foundations of a free-market economy,\u201d arguing that \u201cit is rare to find any country where the government defines which portion of a company\u2019s profit is normal and which is excess, then plans to redistribute that excess socially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Rep. Choi Eun-seok also criticized the idea, saying, \u201cThe notion that companies bear the risks while the government redistributes the gains contradicts market principles.\u201d Rep. Yoon Sang-hyun warned that \u201cthe logic of socially reclaiming excess profits could threaten the competitiveness of South Korea\u2019s core
