1. Analysis of strike photos<\/b>\n<\/div>\n
\n In the released photos, the strike struck the ship\u2019s port quarter at roughly 5 meters above the waterline.\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n A few key observations:\n<\/div>\n

  • Double-hull construction<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
    \n As the photos show, the Namoo has a double-hull. There\u2019s a void between the outer shell and the inner plating, with bulkheads running through that space.\n<\/div>\n
    \n Double hulls are standard on warships, tankers and icebreakers to improve survivability and reduce pollution risk in accidents.\n<\/div>\n
    \n The steel plate on the Namoo is reported at about 10\u201315 mm thick.\n<\/div>\n
    \n<\/div>\n

    • The impact area is steeply angled.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
      \n The strike location slopes steeply relative to horizontal \u2014 roughly 6\u201370 degrees.\n<\/div>\n

      • The detonation likely occurred in the inter-hull void.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

        \n Below I show the approach path and probable point of detonation inferred from the photos.\n<\/div>\n
        \n I judge that the warhead did not perforate both hulls. Instead, it detonated in the space between the outer and inner plates.\n<\/div>\n
        \n The steel at the blue-marked location in the photos is rounded outward, and notably the fourth bulkhead to the right is bent opposite the apparent approach direction \u2014 consistent with an internal blast from the inter-hull space.\n<\/div>\n

        2. Assessing the drone hypothesis<\/b>\n<\/div>\n

        • The Shahed lacks reliable sea-skimming capability.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
          \n<\/div>\n
          \n These low-cost drones generally use commercial GPS and almost certainly lack precision altimeters required for true sea-skimming. Their terminal dive tends to be near-vertical.\n<\/div>\n
          \n<\/div>\n
          <\/span>\n<\/div>\n
          \n<\/div>\n
          \n The photo below shows damage to the tanker Mercer Street after a Shahed strike in 2021. The drone lodged in the deck.\n<\/div>\n
          \n<\/div>\n
          <\/span>\n<\/div>\n
          \n<\/div>\n
          \n Some newer models are fitted with Starlink or 5G links and can be manually guided, so operator-controlled strikes are possible.\n<\/div>\n
          \n That said, I find it unlikely that two operators could repeatedly guide a drone to hit exactly the same small, highly angled spot.\n<\/div>\n

          • Shahed-series drones cannot reliably penetrate 15 mm steel.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
            \n<\/div>\n
            \n Again, Mercer Street photos show holes, but the warhead did not fully penetrate. The strike detonated at or just outside the hull, and the blast bent the steel inward, creating the openings.\n<\/div>\n

            • Could a 400 kg drone at 800 km\/h penetrate by kinetic energy?<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

              \n I ran the numbers on the heaviest, fastest Shahed variant.\n<\/div>\n
              \n The model cited in open sources is the Shahed-238: a jet-powered variant around 380 kg with a top speed near 800 km\/h.\n<\/div>\n
              \n<\/div>\n
              \n I computed kinetic energy.\n<\/div>\n
              \n<\/div>\n
              \n E = 1\/2 mv^2\n<\/div>\n
              \n = 1\/2 \u00d7 380 kg \u00d7 (222.22 m\/s)^2\n<\/div>\n
              \n = 9,382,523 J \u2014 roughly 9 million joules.\n<\/div>\n
              \n That\u2019s a large amount of energy \u2014 comparable in order to the energy involved with some armor-penetrating impacts.\n<\/div>\n
              But analysis indicates that despite that energy, a Shahed\u2019s nose section is brittle and shatters on impact. The drone\u2019s energy disperses rather than concentrating like a solid projectile, so penetration of plated hulls is limited.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n
              \n<\/div>\n

              \n<\/div>\n
              \n Namoo isn\u2019t fitted with military armor \u2014 its plating is around 15 mm \u2014 so it\u2019s vulnerable, but I still assess that a Shahed-type drone is unlikely to penetrate more than a few plates and breach five internal bulkheads as seen here.\n<\/div>\n

              \n 3. Anti-ship missile hypothesis<\/b>\n<\/div>\n
              \n \n<\/div>\n

              • Candidates among Iran\u2019s anti-ship cruise missiles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
                \n Iran fields several anti-ship missiles, both ballistic and cruise. Among cruise missiles, candidates include Nasr-1, Noor, Ghadir, Qader and Abu Mahdi.\n<\/div>\n
                \n<\/div>\n
                \n Nasr-1 has only about a 35 km range and lacks a delayed or penetrator-style warhead, so it\u2019s unlikely. Abu Mahdi is a newer, extreme-range system (in excess of 1,000 km) and also seems unlikely for this engagement.\n<\/div>\n
                \n Ghadir and Qader are extended-range variants of the Noor.\n<\/div>\n
                \n<\/div>\n
                \n That leaves the Noor-family missiles, which carry roughly 165 kg warheads.\n<\/div>\n
                \n<\/div>\n

                • Why would a 165 kg warhead produce relatively light damage?<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
                  That question is valid. A 165 kg warhead \u2014 similar in weight to an Exocet \u2014 would normally inflict heavier damage.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n
