[SPOTV News, Jamsil \u2014 Reporter Kim Tae-woo] Chae Hyun-woo (31, SSG) is one of the KBO\u2019s top speed threats. His base running is widely regarded as elite \u2014 he can swipe second and turn a single into a first-to-third with a burst that would stand out on any club.<\/p>\n
For years, though, he\u2019s largely been pigeonholed as a pinch-runner. Drafted in the 2019 rookie draft\u2019s second phase (8th round, 76th overall), Chae’s elite speed and center-field range landed him on the first-team roster ahead of many peers. Still, managers rarely asked him to do more than run for teammates, and a string of injuries hampered his development.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s rare for a rookie to slide into an everyday role right away. Most newcomers earn roster spots with defense or speed, then parlay limited chances into more playing time. Chae had the tools to make the roster but hadn\u2019t shown enough with the bat to force a larger role.<\/p>\n
His early numbers were thin. In 2019 he recorded a single plate appearance. In 2020 he appeared in 16 games with 24 plate appearances and hit .130. After military service, he barely saw the plate in 2023 and 2024. Last year he got into 41 games and 52 plate appearances but hit just .188 \u2014 not a sample that inspires confidence to hand someone an everyday job.<\/p>\n

\u25b2 On May 8 at Jamsil, Chae Hyun-woo drove in two runs, including the go-ahead hit, and helped secure the team\u2019s victory \u24d2SSG Landers<\/p>\n
This season, though, Chae has made the most of the chances he\u2019s been given and become a spark in SSG\u2019s outfield. He opened the year on the roster, was briefly optioned with a minor issue, and was re-added on May 5. Through May 7 he had collected four hits in six at-bats with a sacrifice fly in seven plate appearances \u2014 a tidy .667 average, albeit in a very small sample.<\/p>\n
Those numbers came mostly in late-game appearances. Seeing the potential, SSG manager Lee Seung-yong gave Chae a start on May 8 against Doosan in Jamsil. With Han Yoo-seom struggling and optioned to the second team, and with left-hander Wes Benjamin on the mound for Doosan, Lee turned to right-handed Chae for a matchup edge.<\/p>\n
Lee explained his decision before the game: \u201cWatching Hyun-woo lately, his hands are getting into a strong, forward position.\u201d The coaching staff felt Chae\u2019s swing mechanics were clicking enough to justify a start.<\/p>\n
Chae rewarded that trust in his first at-bat. In the second inning, with the game scoreless, Oh Tae-gon\u2019s single put a runner on first with one out. After Jo Hyung-woo struck out to bring up two outs, Chae pulled Benjamin\u2019s curveball into left for an RBI single, breaking the deadlock for SSG.<\/p>\n

\u25b2 Chae\u2019s improved results this year come more from a different strike-zone approach than from major mechanical changes \u24d2SSG Landers<\/p>\n
He added a sacrifice fly in the fourth \u2014 one out, runners on first and third \u2014 for his second RBI of the game. He finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, lifting his season average to .625 and capping a productive day.<\/p>\n
Chae insists his swing hasn\u2019t undergone a wholesale change; his approach has. \u201cI try to attack the pitches I like and let the tough ones go,\u201d he said. \u201cI visualize the pitches I\u2019m confident in and swing when they come. Setting a personal strike zone has helped. Instead of reaching for difficult pitches, I\u2019m focusing on the ones I can handle, and the results have followed.\u201d<\/p>\n
That discipline sounds simple but is hard to execute consistently. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely tough,\u201d Chae admitted. \u201cDuring a game, a pitch you plan to let go can look hittable and your hands want to go. It\u2019s a battle of whether you can resist or not.\u201d With his body healthy and more positive plate experiences building up, confidence should follow. Nobody is destined to be a lifelong pinch-runner \u2014 Chae is giving SSG\u2019s outfield a valuable additional option.<\/p>\n
