From octogenarian Kun\u2011Woo Paik, the contemplative \u201cascetic at the keyboard,\u201d to thirty\u2011somethings Yekwon Sunwoo and Seong\u2011Jin Cho and twenty\u2011something superstar Yunchan Lim, Korea\u2019s leading pianists are lining up to meet audiences. Each artist will present programs that reveal distinct musical identities, setting the stage for intense and beautiful artistic encounters.<\/p>\n<p>A striking through line across these recitals is Franz Schubert. Paik, Lim and Sunwoo each place a Schubert piano sonata at the heart of their programs.<\/p>\n<p>Kun\u2011Woo Paik\u2014the pianist known for inward reflection\u2014and Yekwon Sunwoo, who combines dazzling technique with deep feeling, both program Schubert\u2019s Piano Sonata No. 20 in A major, D. 959.<\/p>\n<p>Schubert completed this sonata just two months before his death. It ranks among his late masterworks, fusing bleak foreboding, contemplative reflections on life, and moments of heavenly melody.<\/p>\n<p>The maestro, marking the 70th anniversary of his debut this year, plays the sonata on the 5th at Tongyeong International Music Hall and on the 10th at the Seoul Arts Center. He pairs it with Brahms\u2019s Four Ballades, Op. 10\u2014juxtaposing the solitary soliloquy of a young Brahms with the resigned reflection of Schubert in his final years, and offering a measured, penetrating view of a human life lived.<\/p>\n<p>Yekwon Sunwoo approaches the same Schubert work from a different angle (performances on the 16th at Daegu Dalseo Art Center, the 20th at Seongnam Arts Center, and the 30th at Seoul Arts Center). He devotes the first half to Schubert, then unleashes some of Franz Liszt\u2019s most extreme showpieces in the second half. The Liszt pieces appear on his forthcoming album, due May 7 on Decca, Universal Music\u2019s classical label, and include the Rigoletto Paraphrase (S. 434), Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (S. 244\/2), and Mephisto Waltz No. 1 (S. 514). Liszt\u2019s surging drama gives Sunwoo an ideal platform to showcase his formidable virtuosity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-union.tenbizt.com\/contents\/crawler-dev\/image\/2026\/05\/CP-2023-0083\/image-3711ae04-efca-470b-bbff-9b247f07697f.jpeg\" alt=\"\uc784\uc724\ucc2c\uc774\" 2\ub144 \ub9cc\uc5d0 \ud53c\uc544\ub178 \ub9ac\uc0ac\uc774\ud2c0\uc744 \uc5f0\ub2e4. [\ubaa9 \ud504\ub85c\ub355\uc158 \uc81c\uacf5] class=\"img_LSize\"> If Paik turns inward and Sunwoo builds toward explosive drama, Yunchan Lim\u2014who has become a global phenomenon\u2014returns to Korea for a six\u2011concert recital series after a two\u2011year absence (performances include the 6th at Lotte Concert Hall and the 12th at Seoul Arts Center). This series is notable for Lim\u2019s clear, personal sense of musical curation.<\/p>\n<p>Lim pairs Schubert\u2019s Piano Sonata No. 17 in D major, D. 850 (the \u201cGasteiner\u201d) with the Piano Sonatas Nos. 2, 3 and 4 by Alexander Scriabin. By setting Schubert\u2014who helped usher Romanticism out of the classical era\u2014against Scriabin, who moved toward a singular harmonic language, Lim probes the boundary between musical eras. Notably, Schubert is a composer Lim has not previously presented in a domestic recital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to create work that endures through time,\u201d Lim said. \u201cI built this program around Schubert and Scriabin\u2014composers I\u2019ve loved for a long time and never wanted to ignore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scriabin\u2019s Sonata No. 2 is especially meaningful: Lim played it in the second round (quarterfinals) of the 2022 Van Cliburn Competition, earning praise for explosive technique and delicate tonal color. The piece that helped define his name four years ago returns now, having stood the test of time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-union.tenbizt.com\/contents\/crawler-dev\/image\/2026\/05\/CP-2023-0083\/image-a27a7b0e-75e2-4f06-a628-fd07aa8483fa.jpeg\" alt=\"\uc870\uc131\uc9c4\uc774\" \ud611\uc5f0\uc790\ub85c \uc11c\ub294 \ub77c\ud558\ube0c \uc0e4\ub2c8\uac00 \uc9c0\ud718\ud558\ub294 \ubb8c\ud5e8\ud544 \ucf58\uc11c\ud2b8 [\ube48\uccb4\ub85c \uc81c\uacf5] class=\"img_LSize\"> While the three pianists pit themselves against the solo instrument, Seong\u2011Jin Cho will match his powers against a full orchestra. He appears as soloist with the Munich Philharmonic under conductor Lahav Shani on the 5th and 6th at the Seoul Arts Center and on the 9th at Lotte Concert Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Cho plays a different concerto on each date. On the 5th he presents Beethoven\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 1, highlighting the youthful sparkle and classical clarity of early Beethoven. On the 6th and 9th he tackles Prokofiev\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 2, a work that concentrates extreme technique and tightly focused energy\u2014an opportunity for Cho to display his virtuosic range.<\/p>\n<p>Also on the season\u2019s roster is the brother\u2011pianist duo Lee Hyuk and Lee Hyo, who drew attention at last year\u2019s Chopin Competition; they give a duo recital on the 24th at Seoul Arts Center. The brothers, who showed strikingly different musical personalities during the competition, promise one of the program\u2019s freshest offerings. After solo Chopin performances on two pianos, they join forces for Gershwin\u2019s Fantasia on Porgy and Bess, Arthur Benjamin\u2019s Six Caribbean Pieces for Two Pianos, and Rachmaninoff\u2019s
