People Power Party candidate for Jeongseon County mayor Choi Cheol-gyu unveiled a new vision for Jeongseon.<\/p>\n

At a press briefing at his campaign office in Jeongseon, Gangwon Province, on the afternoon of the 28th, he emphasized linking the Kangwon Land project\u2014the primary funding source for major Jeongseon initiatives\u2014with the local economy.<\/p>\n

Choi previously served as acting CEO (vice president) of Kangwon Land.<\/p>\n

He said that, while serving as Kangwon Land\u2019s vice president, he developed the \u201cK-HIT project,\u201d a Korean-style integrated tourism plan for High1, and pledged to support the project\u2019s second phase if elected.<\/p>\n

He added that the second-phase plan envisions a High1 dome and hotel and would require an investment of 1.8 trillion KRW (approximately $1.35 billion). He said backing the plan would clearly help revive the local economy.<\/p>\n

He explained that Kangwon Land\u2019s dividends, which fund the rural basic income, have risen from 9 billion KRW (approximately $6.75 million) to about 10.7 billion KRW (approximately $8.03 million), and that he plans to convert High1 Points (comps), currently valued at roughly 41.5 billion KRW (approximately $31.13 million), into local currency to finance the basic income program.<\/p>\n

He also pledged to expand local food supply contracts with Kangwon Land; preserve the Gariwangsan cable car and link it to ecological wellness tourism; pursue ambitious urban regeneration; address staffing shortages at overnight nursing facilities; build a public funeral hall; globalize the Arirang Festival; and expand both public and private apartment construction.<\/p>\n

Choi said his core pledges to transform Jeongseon are completing a 90-minute commuting zone to the Seoul metropolitan area, promoting joint growth between Kangwon Land and coal-industry transition zones, delivering top-tier quality of life in Jeongseon, and increasing incomes through sixth-industry (value-added agricultural) initiatives.
