President Donald Trump announced that a nuclear agreement with Iran has collapsed and abruptly ordered the U.S. Navy to impose a full blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. He also warned that the United States would seize foreign-flagged vessels that pay tolls to Iran.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Trump said the talks \u201cwent smoothly and the parties agreed on most issues, but we failed to reach an agreement on the one critical issue \u2014 the nuclear one.\u201d He added that the Navy will \u201cimmediately begin procedures to block any vessel attempting to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump said the United States seeks unimpeded freedom of navigation through the strait, but accused Iran of disrupting passage by issuing vague threats about mines. He condemned those actions as \u201cworld extortion\u201d and said leaders worldwide, including the United States, will not yield to intimidation.<\/p>\n

Along with the blockade, the president announced stepped-up measures to choke off Iran\u2019s funding. He said he ordered the Navy to search and seize any ship in international waters that has paid illegal tolls to Iran, warning that those who pay such tolls \u201cwill not be guaranteed safety on the high seas.\u201d He also said U.S. forces will immediately begin operations to destroy mines Iran has allegedly laid in the strait.<\/p>\n

Trump delivered an unusually blunt warning about potential Iranian military provocation. \u201cAny Iranian who fires on U.S. forces or peaceful ships will be blown to hell,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cwe are locked and loaded,\u201d and that, at the appropriate time, U.S. forces will finish off what remains of Iran.<\/p>\n

He went on, \u201cBecause of their nuclear ambitions, Iran\u2019s navy and air force, its air defenses and radars have become useless; with Khomeini and much of the leadership dead, the country has collapsed,\u201d and he added that \u201cthey know better than anyone how to end this situation.\u201d<\/p>\n
