On April 9 local time, Iran held large-scale memorials nationwide marking the 40th day since the death of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.<\/p>\n

Iranian media reported that millions gathered in hundreds of cities, including the capital Tehran, to mourn Khamenei.<\/p>\n

The state broadcaster amplified the atmosphere of mourning by linking live coverage from locations across the country beginning in the morning.<\/p>\n

Ayatollah Khamenei was killed along with members of his family on Feb. 28 \u2014 the first day of the war \u2014 in strikes that the government says were carried out by the United States and Israel.<\/p>\n

\u201cArbaeen\u201d marks the 40th day following the martyrdom of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, revered by Shia Muslims as the third imam, who was killed at the Battle of Karbala by forces aligned with a Sunni dynasty.<\/p>\n

For Shia Muslims, Arbaeen is not merely a day of mourning; it is a time to reaffirm Imam Hussein\u2019s spirit of steadfast resistance and to pledge to carry on his cause.<\/p>\n

Iranian authorities appear to have used the nationwide Arbaeen observances to equate Khamenei\u2019s death with Imam Hussein\u2019s martyrdom, to heighten anti-U.S. and anti-Israel sentiment, and to galvanize a determination to resist.<\/p>\n

President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior officials marched alongside citizens, and leaders from across society delivered eulogies urging people to uphold Khamenei\u2019s legacy of resistance.<\/p>\n

Video broadcast by Iranian outlets showed crowds dressed in black carrying Iranian flags, Hezbollah banners and photos of Ayatollah Khamenei, chanting slogans such as \u201cDeath to America\u201d and \u201cDeath to Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Observers are watching whether Khamenei\u2019s designated successor and son, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei\u2014who has so far issued only written statements\u2014will appear in public or deliver a spoken address.<\/p>\n

Mojtaba had not appeared by late afternoon.<\/p>\n
