Photo courtesy of the Ministry of National Defense.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p> JEONJU, South Korea \u2014 The remains of Private Choi Baek-in, a Korean War hero who made the ultimate sacrifice at 19 while defending his country, have finally returned home after 76 years. <br \/> MAKRI officials confirmed that remains excavated in April 2007 near Unju Mountain in Yeongcheon belong to Pvt. Choi, who served with the 7th Regiment, 6th Infantry Division. <br \/> At the family&#8217;s request, a solemn homecoming ceremony was held at the Jeonju residence of Choi&#8217;s sister. <br \/> During the ceremony, Col. Kim presented the family with a hero&#8217;s return plaque, official identification documents, and personal effects recovered with the remains. He also briefed them on Choi&#8217;s service record, the excavation process, and the identification procedures. <br \/> Choi&#8217;s sister, visibly moved, shared, &#8220;Just days before MAKRI called, I dreamed of my brother. I felt compelled to prepare a meal for him and bought chopsticks and a spoon. When I received the call that they had found him, it felt like a dream come true. I&#8217;m grateful that I can lay him to rest in the National Cemetery before I pass on.&#8221; <br \/> This homecoming resulted from the combined efforts of Choi&#8217;s sister providing DNA samples, advancements in genetic analysis, and the tireless work of MAKRI personnel and soldiers. <br \/> In 2007, MAKRI and 50th Division troops recovered Choi&#8217;s remains and personal effects from what was likely a foxhole used during the Korean War. <br \/> Despite attempts in 2008 to extract DNA from the remains, the technology at the time was insufficient for a positive identification. The lack of family DNA samples for comparison also hindered the process. <br \/> The breakthrough came in October 2021 when Choi&#8217;s sister, then 79, provided a DNA sample at the Jeonju Health Center. This, coupled with improved DNA extraction and analysis techniques, allowed for confirmation of the family relationship. <br \/> Born in October 1930 in Jeonju, Choi was the eldest of six siblings. He enlisted in August 1950, shortly after the Korean War began. Serving with the 7th Regiment, 6th Division, he fell in battle against North Korean forces during the Battle of Yeongcheon from September 6-13, 1950. Family members recall that he worked in a furniture factory as a teenager and was unmarried when he joined the military. <br \/> The Battle of Yeongcheon was a crucial engagement where South Korean forces, including elements of the 1st, 6th, and 8th Divisions, successfully repelled the North Korean 15th Division from Yeongcheon. This victory allowed ROK forces to defend the Nakdong River line and marked a turning point, as it halted the North Korean advance towards Daegu and set the stage for the UN counteroffensive. <br \/> Pvt. Choi is MAKRI&#8217;s first identified hero of 2023. Since the remains recovery project began in April 2000, 269 Korean War soldiers have been returned to their families. <br \/> MAKRI officials stress the critical need for public participation in identifying fallen heroes who have yet to be returned to their families. <br \/> Nationwide DNA sample collection is available for family members up to 8th cousins of fallen soldiers.
