In a phone call on the 10th, President Lee Jae-myung reaffirmed South Korea’s commitment to bolstering defense cooperation with NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) during discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. <\/p>\n

The conversation, initiated at Rutte’s request, saw President Lee and Secretary General Rutte exchange views on tackling global security challenges and expanding South Korea-NATO collaboration. This marks their first dialogue since their initial contact seven months ago in July of last year. <\/p>\n

President Lee highlighted South Korea’s position as an ideal partner for NATO member countries in defense cooperation, citing the nation’s exceptional defense industry capabilities. He proposed advancing this partnership through the recently established South Korea-NATO Defense Industry Consultative Body. Secretary General Rutte reciprocated by praising South Korea’s defense industry prowess and pledged continued support for enhancing South Korea-NATO defense ties. <\/p>\n

The leaders concurred on the necessity of ongoing cooperation between South Korea and NATO to address global security challenges, particularly in light of the growing security interconnectedness between the Indo-Pacific and European regions. They agreed to maintain close communication on critical security issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the evolving situation on the Korean Peninsula.
