Mayor Park Hee-jo has prioritized establishing Dong-gu’s unique identity rather than imitating others. In essence, he emphasizes staying true to Dong-gu’s character. To accomplish this, he has gradually implemented changes across various sectors, including education, welfare, urban development, economy, and culture. Now, he is committed to empowering residents to experience ‘tangible change.’ He stated, “The past three and a half years have been crucial for defining Dong-gu’s direction, restructuring, and preparing for the future.” He reiterated, “I will dedicate all administrative resources to responsibly completing each policy and project, ensuring that residents can clearly experience ‘tangible change’ in their daily lives.” We met with Mayor Park, who is implementing “Genuine Coexistence, Right Dong-gu” alongside 220,000 residents. <\/p>\n

In a nutshell, I would describe it as “laying the foundation for the Dong-gu Renaissance and clearly defining our path forward.” The most significant change is that we’ve clarified Dong-gu’s structure and direction, beyond just individual project achievements. Faced with population decline and potential regional extinction, Dong-gu has chosen to transform by focusing on education, residency, and future generations. We’ve steadily pursued this direction. Through bold investments in education and childcare, we’re transitioning from a city people leave to raise children to one where they can stay. The urban redevelopment centered around Daejeon Station is transforming Dong-gu from a neglected old town into a high-density innovation hub attracting businesses, talent, and diverse functions. This change marks the beginning of a transformation that connects education, residency, urban development, and the future. I believe the 8th term of elected officials has clearly set the course for this journey. <\/p>\n

– What has been disappointing? <\/strong><\/p>\n

The ‘pace’ of change. Projects like urban development, educational infrastructure improvements, and Daecheong Lake regulation reforms involve substantial budgets and complex legal procedures. This has slowed progress, often falling short of residents’ expectations. However, previously stalled projects are now gaining momentum. I’m committed to strengthening cooperation with Daejeon City and the central government to accelerate project implementation in the remaining time. <\/p>\n

– This year’s district slogan is ‘L\u00b7I\u00b7K\u00b7E Dong-gu.’ What does this mean? <\/strong><\/p>\n

For the final year of our 8th term, we’ve chosen ‘LIKE Dong-gu’ as our slogan. Throughout this term, Dong-gu has forged its own path rather than following others. We’ve tackled education and population issues in our unique way and driven urban change at our own pace. ‘LIKE’ stands for Living, Innovation, K-culture, and Education. These four elements represent Dong-gu’s chosen direction and the core values we must complete and carry forward. Ultimately, I believe that by remaining true to Dong-gu’s identity, without imitation or comparison, we’ll naturally foster a deeper appreciation for our district. The 2026 ‘LIKE Dong-gu’ encapsulates this conviction. This year, we’re focusing on ‘tangible results’ and ‘completion.’ Instead of introducing new policies, we’re committed to finishing ongoing initiatives so that each resident can clearly experience the benefits in their daily lives. We’ll concentrate on increasing efficiency and execution in key areas such as education, childcare, urban development, population policy, welfare, safety, and Daecheong Lake revitalization. <\/p>\n

– How is Dong-gu’s urban center changing? <\/strong><\/p>\n

We’re entering a new phase of urban development through balanced renewal centered around Daejeon Station and region-specific regeneration that blends our past and future. The cornerstone of the Daejeon Station development, Complex Zone 2, is set to break ground in the first half of this year. Key projects like the urban convergence district, Soje Central Park, and Shin-An Station Park are gaining momentum. We’re also seeing tangible progress in redevelopment and reconstruction. Multiple projects, including those in Gaya-dong, Hongdo-dong, Samsung-dong, and Gao-dong, are moving forward smoothly. Residential improvement initiatives in Cheondong, Daedong, and Guseong are picking up pace, systematically upgrading older areas while gradually increasing housing supply. Following successful urban regeneration in Gao-dong and Daedong, the Nangwol-dong project is now in full swing, featuring a forest experience center and a wood culture street. This expands our tailored regeneration model that leverages local characteristics. We’re also boosting job creation by expanding our industrial base alongside urban restructuring. Industrial complexes in Samjeong and Daebyeol districts are fostering a convergence of manufacturing, logistics, and high-tech industries, creating a virtuous cycle of urban growth and employment opportunities. <\/p>\n

– How are you addressing population challenges through education? <\/strong><\/p>\n

The cornerstone of our 8th term has been a policy shift to tackle population decline and regional vitality through education. Rather than short-term population influx strategies, we believe that creating a child-friendly environment is key to enhancing our city’s competitiveness. A prime example is the confirmed establishment of Cheondong Middle School. This addresses a long-standing community need and marks a turning point in bridging the east-west educational divide. We’re aiming for a 2027 opening. We’re also accelerating the development of a future-oriented, publicly-managed education model. The Global Dream Campus, offering quality foreign language education, is set to open soon. An English library for children and youth in Shinheung Cultural Park is also in progress. We’ve created an environment where learning is seamlessly integrated into daily life, with neighborhood book cafes, smart libraries, and various cultural programs. We’ve consistently provided practical support for students and parents to plan their futures, including pioneering initiatives like our high school admission and career guidance sessions, university partnerships, and future career experiences. <\/p>\n

– What are your thoughts on the proposed Daejeon-Chungnam administrative merger? <\/strong><\/p>\n

I believe the Daejeon-Chungnam administrative integration is crucial for boosting regional competitiveness. I strongly support both the direction and necessity of this merger. Given that Daejeon and Chungnam are already closely linked in terms of living and economic zones, integration could yield significant benefits in transportation, industry-tourism linkages, and administrative efficiency. Dong-gu, with its concentration of transport, industry, and educational infrastructure around Daejeon Station and the urban convergence district, is well-positioned to play a pivotal role. We have the potential to be a key hub in restructuring regional transportation, distributing industrial functions, and decentralizing public institutions. However, resident consensus is paramount. This integration must be based on thorough discussion and social agreement, always aiming to genuinely improve residents’ quality of life. <\/p>\n

– Do you have a message for Dong-gu residents? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Our policies in education, population management, housing, urban development, welfare, and safety are not isolated initiatives. They’re interconnected efforts shaping Dong-gu’s future. That’s why I want to make 2026 a year of ‘AND’ rather than a full stop – a year that bridges our achievements with our future aspirations. We’re calling it ‘Dong-gu Anding.’ For the rest of my term, I pledge to listen more closely to residents, pay careful attention to their needs, and take full responsibility for our actions.
